White Beer - 白啤酒

Refreshing, is without a doubt the best qualification of these beers which owe their name to their cloudy state and light, though slightly yellow, colour. Endowed with a relatively small amount of alcohol, they are also characterized by a high quantity of wheat. It is the wheat, un-malted, that gives them their pale colour and lightly fruity flavour, their cloudy state being due to the still-active yeast, providing the second fermentation in the bottle

White Beer (witbier or tarwebier in Dutch), though very popular in recent years, is a very old beer, of which we find traces as far back as the Middle Ages. Little by little, with the development of more and more modern techniques, White Beers began to disappear from the brewing landscape until they reached a point of almost total neglect after the second World War. No one counted on the tenacity of one Pierre Celis, a dairyman, who, on a warm evening in the summer of 1964, decided to re-launch this type of beer. Actually several breweries reinstated it to a place of honour, the most famous being Hoegaarden.

Brugs: 4,8 %

A straw yellow, cloudy beer, its head is white, abundant, dense and persistent. Slightly piquant, it offers a nose of young wheat and hops as well as notes of fruits and herbs. It has a weak bitterness, except in the finish. The release of gasses is well balanced.

Hoegaarden: 5%

A slightly yellow wheat beer. Hoegaarden presents itself in a cloud of yeast, with a collar of bright foam and aromas of spiced fruits with a dominance of coriander and cool orange.

Hoegaarden Speciale: 5,6 %

Hoegaarden Speciale is a golden blond lightly spiced and releasing a pronounced colour of coriander and tobacco. Speciale also offers aromas of wheat, fresh spices, a touch of citrus and a light bitterness. Round in the mouth, it develops a taste of malt lightly roasted, lifted up by notes of honey and hazelnut.

Wittekerke: 5,8 %

This white beer in the classic style owes its name, strange though it may seem, to the heroine of a television series broadcast on VTM, the private Flemish channel. Wittekerke was voted best Belgian Wheat beer two years in a row by Belgian beer drinkers.
